What is Smart Connectivity?

The future has arrived and it’s knocking on your front door. Home Connect brings smart technology to your appliances and lets you control them with your phone or tablet.

What is Smart Connectivity?

Let’s take a look at NEFF, Siemens and AEG to see what they are doing to make our lives easier and make savings for the environment.

Neff has always been a popular choice with home bakers and with their ‘hide and slide’ oven making an appearance with the popular cooking show ‘The great British Bake Off’, it is not surprising that they currently have introduced ‘Home Connect’ on more than 40 of their products ranging from oven, fridge, dishwasher, coffee machine and other home appliances over the Wi-Fi.

Forgot to put the dishwasher on, use NEFF ‘Easy Start’ from anywhere and let the dishwasher do all the work…can’t remember how many tabs you have left, then ask the app, it will tell you how many you have in stock!

Siemens also shares the ‘Home Connect’ app with Bosch, Gaggenau and Thermador. In 2020, they launched their ‘StudioLine’ product range which are all Wi-Fi enabled. This connectivity creates new possibilities in your living space; such as changing the colour of your cooker hood to change the ambience of the kitchen and even to be notified when a filter needs changing.

AEG has an innovative app called ‘My AEG Kitchen’, which means you can register, connect, monitor, control and update your connected appliances. Some of AEG Smart cooling features include optimum temperature control (‘Coolmat’), Consistent climate (‘DynamicAir’), Holiday Mode which lets you keep the temperature at 15ºC which prevents odours and FridgeCam, which is fantastic for the environment as it cuts down on your food waste because there is no more guessing what you have in the fridge.

Have a look at the video clip for the NEFF ‘How to connect your dishwasher?’ for a great example to show you just how user friendly this technology is. It takes you through the whole process, step by step.

Why do I need ‘Remote Monitoring’?

All the featured apps have been built to save you time. They all let you monitor and control your appliances wherever you are. The kind of flexibility they have range from pre-heating the oven, starting the coffee machine or letting the oven send you notifications when dinner is ready! When you are on the way back from the farmers market, send a message to your fridge to chill down letting you pack away your vegetables in the perfect condition.

What if my appliances go wrong?

If your appliance develops a fault, then you can get immediate assistance over the phone with the service engineers able to use the remote diagnostics service remotely.

Is it all just another sales tool or are there real benefits?

There is so much more to be able to control throughout your home other than your appliances, for example, your home’s thermostat, lights, audio speakers, TVs, security cameras and locks can be connected into a common system, which can be controlled from your smart phone or through a mobile touch screen device.

As technology development continues to expand, so will the possibilities for consumer home automation to make life easier and more enjoyable. Connected appliances enhance the experience and convenience of your every day tasks. The result is fresher, cleaner and tastier with less effort.

See for yourself by viewing this Siemens short video. Once the app has connected, look just how easy it is to use the appliance whether you are at the office or at home.

Nearly tea- time…Simply tap via the app, speak to your oven with voice control and make the oven the perfect temperature for you to come home to.

You might think of smart connection as a clever way to keep up with the latest technology, or an opportunity for homeowners to show off, but there are some amazing practical advantages to home automation.

Want a couple of examples? Here they are:

  1. Managing all of your home appliances from one device
